H.I.D. Lighting: An H.I.D.
(high intensity discharge) lamp is a bulb that operates in the same
way as a fluorescent tube, but is shaped similarly to a incandescent
bulb. They do require a separate ballast to operate.
The three categories of H.I.D. lamps
include Metal Halide (MH) and High Pressure Sodium (HPS) and
Conversion (allows you to switch from MH to HPS and vice versa).
They are used for garden lighting because of the intense light
output, and the range of spectrum that plants desire.
Compact Fluorescents: Compact
Fluorescent bulbs function closely to H.I.D. lamps, but the ballast
needed to ignite the light is built into the bulb, rather than as a
separate unit. Compact fluorescents are ideal for seedlings, plant
cuttings and small plants.
High Output Fluorescents: HO Fluorescent tubes are contained within
a fixture
that contains the ballast. They include a variety of high output
fluorescent tubes. Fluorescent lighting produces
very little heat which lets you position them closer to your plants
to raise the light levels. Highly recommended for seedlings or plant
propagation (cloning). Fluorescent tubes are capable of covering a
plant's life from conception to maturity.
Each family of grow lights has it's
unique advantage for use in your indoor garden or greenhouse.
